Heart Institute Among Lowest Mortality Rates in Canada According to New Report
Ottawa, October 31 – According to new indicators and a report released today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), in collaboration with the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) has among the lowest mortality rates related to selected cardiac interventions in the country. This is the first time results are publicly available in Canada for cardiac care centres.
The Cardiac Care Quality Indicators Report found that, over the 3 years studied, UOHI death rates were among the lowest in the country and that few patients were readmitted within 30 days of their procedure.
The report looked at mortality rates following 4 cardiac procedures:
- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG): 0.5% (Canadian average is 1.3%)
- Aortic valve replacement (AVR): 0.8% (Canadian average is 1.3%)
- Combined CABG and AVR: 1.9% (Canadian average is 3.3%)
- Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI): 2.2% (Canadian average is 2.3%)

This new report exemplifies that the Heart Institute’s model, as imagined by Dr. Wilbert Keon 40 years ago as a stand-alone cardiac centre here in Ottawa, and inspired by a unique culture of excellence and innovation leading in patient care, research and education, is central to our success,” said Dr. Thierry Mesana, the Heart Institute’s President and CEO. “Our patients and their loved ones continue to receive world-class care from our great team of devoted and compassionate health care professionals despite the increasing demand for cardiac care in our region.”
Next spring, the Heart Institute will inaugurate its next generation cardiac centre that will see more than 145,000 sq. ft. of new space, five operating rooms and one shelled-in operating room, nine catheterization/electrophysiology labs, and an additional surgical critical care unit with 27 beds. This new facility will ensure our continued capacity to shape cardiovascular care, research and education for the coming decades.
